In 1960 my uncle was cool. He had just graduated from college, had a great job with this up and coming company called IBM, lots of girlfriends (much to the chagrin of my grandmother) and to top it all off, he had just bought a new convertible Karmann-Ghia from Volkswagen. This was VW's first shot at the sports car market and a vast departure from the Beetle. But it worked because it was unique and for 47 years ago, had a pretty stylish design. My family loved that car and being his favorite nephew, I got to ride in it a lot, that is when he didn't have a lovely lady beside him because it was only a 2 seater. Unfortunately he had to get rid of it a few years later when he got a job with Ford and was given a company car which he was told he must drive. Unfortunately it was not a Mustang.
I have no idea what he paid for that car but I know it was a lot less than the VW I just priced out on-line below. Look at the price, just under $80k, twice what I paid for my first house. Somehow I think the thrill of owning a convertible would still be much greater than owning a station wagon, notwithstanding the twin turbo.
