Now that I am finally beginning to recover from Olympic withdrawl symptoms, I realize that the U.S. is finally going to elect a new President soon. Well, it's actually 3 more months but after the seemingly endless (8 years to be exact) bitching about Bush, the most powerful country in the world is finally going to get a new President. Wait a sec-couldn't they have done that 4 years ago? Never mind-it's definitely going to happen now.
As someone who lives in a country next to the U.S., it's difficult not to get caught up in the fever that has already started in Denver. I watched Joe Biden tonight act like a primary school teacher repeatedly saying some inane phrase that the audience then reacted to with a response which they also repeated over and over. Last night I watched Bill Clinton's wife talk about her normal upbringing. Maybe so Mrs Clinton, but how normal is it for the wife of an ex-President to try to become a President as well? And you lent $13 mil to your own campaign which you in turn lost and you think you're going to get it back? That's some moxie you got.
So tomorrow night I'm going to watch some guy who says he's going to take America back. No question, he is charismatic, intelligent, ambitious and has a great looking family. Can he do the job? Who knows? Only time will tell. Indeed, he may even lose- he had a huge lead a few weeks ago in the polls and now he is even with his opponent.
Next week we get to watch a guy who is older than 90% of the people he wants to lead. Not that he's not capable because of his age but even to someone like me who is only 11 years younger, it is a little scary isn't it? Notwithstanding, I wouldn't want to be the guy following in Bush's missteps.
I know this all seems terribly naive to many Americans who like to over analyze every little detail of the election process. But as someone on the outside looking in, I am going to watch it like most other people who live outside of the U.S. for what the American election process appears to us to be-a spectacle made for TV. Enjoy!!
Oh by the way, we may soon have an election in Canada-we don't know yet but if one is called in the next week or two, it will be over and done with before the U.S. election. Maybe the U.S. could take a lesson from that-just saying.
