These days, when you read about golf and the initials TW, you usually think about Tiger Woods. This weekend however, no one was thinking about Tiger and everyone , especially boomers, were hoping that the "old" TW, Tom Watson could pull off a miracle at the British Open. And if it wasn't for Watson hitting an 8 iron on 18 a few feet too far, the media would be falling over themselves trying to come up with unrealistic analogies about what an incredible achievement it is for a man just short of 60 to win one of the most coveted events in golf.
I sat in front of my TV screaming at that approach shot on 18 to bite before it slid off the back of the green but when Watson missed the putt to win, I turned it off because I didn't want to watch what was probably going to happen and eventually did. Of course, I recorded it, but you could just see from the look on Watson's face that he was spent.
Tom Watson is the epitome of class and while he didn't win, he gave us all a look back at why the era of Palmer, Nicklaus, Player, Watson and Miller was the most exciting era in professional golf.
Oh yeah, some guy by the name of Stewart Cink won.
