I have posted a few articles on online dating sites that you can see in the
online dating category. I get some new visitors to this site because they find it through search engines when they type in something like "boomer dating" or "online over 50 dating" etc. So there are obviously a lot of boomers/seniors looking for dating sites. I think most of the sites I have posted here are reputable but users still have to be very careful because no matter how much screening the site may do, some weirdos and more likely scammers, may be using the site as well.
I have received 2 emails from boomer males who were scammed, 1 successfully and 1 unsuccessfully. In both cases they were using offshore sites (so they think anyway) that had women from other countries on them. In both cases, they were inundated with responses to their profiles. The women were supposedly from either Asian or Eastern European countries. They were both surprised about how good their English was. Eventually, both received emails telling them that the women that they both were starting to fall for were using translation services they had to pay for but they didn't have enough money to continue and could the men send the required money.
The one dealing with the Asian site refused and was able to contact other women who, although their English was poor, were still able to converse. But then once he became close to 1 one woman in particular, she asked him for a loan to send her son to English school. Alarms went off and the guy wrote and told her he wanted to call her and that was the last he heard from her. He eventually felt the whole site was just a rip off and there probably not even any women, just a room full of people pounding out romantic emails and phony pictures with the view to setting the men up to send money.
The other guy did send some money for translation services-3 times and kept receiving more and more provocative pictures of his supposed new girlfriend. Like the Asian site, she eventually asked for money and he sent 1/2 of what she wanted and she wrote him back saying that he had to send the rest. Fortunately, he came to his senses but it did cost him close to $1,000 before he did.
In both cases the women (?) were a lot younger than the men and were very quick to profess their love.
Finally, I read this article about a boomer woman who had a similar experience.
I still think that online dating for boomers and seniors has a lot of merits, but like anything you do online, know and understand who you are dealing with before you get too involved. Remember, the old adage "if it seems to good to be true, it usually isn't true." In case you need help, there's plenty out there. When I typed online dating into the Amazon book search engine, I got over 1,000 results, including a few directed at boomers. So be careful out there.
