There are a lot of contestants in the cheap phone calls race. I have long been a fan of Skype and still am but I recently was introduced to Mobivox and with decent sound quality, so far it seems to be a solid contender in this market.
The main difference between it and Skype is that you can make calls easily from your own landline or cell phone so you don't need a computer to initiate a call. You can also call Skype users. If you call another Mobivox user, the call is free and if you call a regular land line or cell phone, the charges are competitive with most other long distance services.
But what I really like is the easy setup. On their website, you register the phone(s) you are going to use and then you can also set up the names and numbers of people you will regularly call. Then , after you have loaded your account by credit card with some time, simply dial your local access number and their system acknowledges you by name. Then, say the name of the person you are calling and you are connected. Of course, there are options that allow you to call from any phone and call numbers not on your frequently called list.
Think about how easy it would be to set this up for someone who doesn't normally use cheap ld options because of the hassle of all the codes that need to be entered. Just tell them to call the access number, say the person's name they want to call and everything is done automatically for them. (of course you need to know who their contacts are and their phone #'s when you set this up for someone else.)
So if you are looking for a last minute gift it's a great way to introduce new technology to someone who wouldn't normally use this type of service. They also give you a free 10 minute call to try it out. Click on the graphic.
(Disclaimer-I am neither a reseller of this service nor am I being paid to
post this. Mobivox gave me a $10 credit to try it out.)
