How many boomers work at Google?
Probably not too many if any. They are currently being sued for unfair dismissal by an ex-employee Brian Reid who was Director of Operations and Engineering. This is not just some code humper, he has a PhD from Carnegie-Mellon University and was an engineering and computer science professor at Stanford. He was part of the core team at CMU that developed internet email standards.
According to TechCrunch:
"Reid claims that despite receiving positive work reviews he was dismissed by Google after being told he was “slow”, “fuzzy”, “lethargic”, and did not “display a sense of urgency” and was told by a manager that his ideas were “obsolete” and “too old to matter”. Reid also noted in evidence that some of his colleagues referred to him as an “old man”, an “old guy” and an “old fuddy-duddy”.
I worked in hi-tech most of my career and I never felt much of an age bias until I was in my 50's but when it kicks in, it can be disturbing. For some reason, most people under 40 feel that anyone older doesn't belong in that industry which is of course a crock.
You would think with all the numbers about boomers and seniors flocking to the internet that hi tech companies would be smart enough to have a few older staff so they could understand our points of view and how to get our attention.
